Business Source License 1.1 (BSL 1.1)
KrillClaw uses the Business Source License 1.1 — the same license used by MariaDB, HashiCorp, and Sentry. In plain English: you can use, modify, and distribute KrillClaw freely for most purposes. The only restriction is using it to offer a competing commercial product or managed service.
Who Can Use KrillClaw for Free
- Individuals — personal projects, tinkering, learning, any non-commercial use
- Startups & small businesses — companies with less than $1M annual revenue
- Small deployments — fewer than 10,000 devices
- Open source projects — integrating KrillClaw into OSS
- Education & research — universities, students, academic labs
If you're unsure whether your use qualifies, email us. We almost always say yes.
Commercial Licensing
Device License
$0.02 / device
For companies deploying KrillClaw on commercial hardware at scale. Capped at $50,000 total — once you hit the cap, deploy unlimited devices.
Enterprise
$100,000 / year
Flat annual license. Unlimited devices, unlimited use, priority support, custom integrations. For large deployments or companies that want simplicity.
Every release converts to Apache 2.0 after 2 years — permanently open source.
